What support is available?

An introduction to the support and services available at our university.

Background

Our ASC (Autism Spectrum Conditions) Team offers support, information and guidance on any autism-related matters within our University.

Support is tailored on an individual basis in order to ensure access to the most effective support for you. Some examples of support other students have found useful are:

  • Reasonable adjustments to exams & teaching (e.g. extra time, use of a PC, additional time to complete assessments etc.)
  • Make the transition from home to university
  • Learn to navigate the University environment
  • Become involved in the social side of University life – including through our Eureka social group
  • Deal with stress and emotional challenges at university
  • Advice & guidance when applying for Disabled Students Allowance (DSA)

There are also the following general support services. You may not need many (or any) of these services while you study at Swansea, but it can be useful to know these are there IF you need them –

  • Self Help resources  – if you struggling with your mental health, but didn’t want to talk to anyone
  • For help with your academic course, you can visit the Centre for Academic Success
  • The Disability Office can support students with a wide variety of long term medical and learning conditions (such as dyslexia) .
  • The Student Union Advice Centre – for help from money worries, academic troubles, and housing problems.
  • If you are struggling with your finances or are having difficulties accessing your student loan, the university has a specialist team to help
  • Look here for information about LGBTQ+ events and societies in Swansea
  • Here is some information about how to practice religion at Swansea
  • If you need any help with a visa, then you can visit the international team
  • For practical advice about getting the most out of your time at University, the Welfare team offers general advice to all students

How could this affect me?

Getting used to life as a University student can be a challenge for anyone, it is important to know that there is support, information and resources available if you need them. Talking to us about the support available, any questions or concerns you have, and visiting campus, might help you make a decision whether you want to study with us, and ensure you have the best possible university experience if you do.

Practical tips

Where possible we would suggest you contact our ASC Team as soon as you have applied, even if you haven’t decided that you are definitely studying with us. This will give us plenty of time to talk about your support, give you an opportunity to look around our campus and ensure any support is in place for when you start.

To make arrangements to meet with the team please email wellbeing@swansea.ac.uk or phone 01792 295592.
